Millinery makes for lasting bonds.
When Carolyn and Maggie shared a workspace at Laura del Villagio’s Vintage Straw Blocking class, they expected to hone their skills. What they didn’t expect was how easily they could bond over precise stitches and delicate materials. Just like in the olden days, in a drawing room, stitching and chatting about their families, their homes and of course their pets, making plans to visit each other in Northcumberland and Nashville.

And nearly a year later, those fast friends got together again on a cruise to the Farne Islands, Northumberland. (photo courtesy of Maggie) . We certainly hope that they will re-join Millinery MeetUp in 2026 .
To a degree, Millinery MeetUp feels like a Summer Camp, where friendships are made over a sufferring through the same miseries of a bad stitch or missed supply for the class. And in the end, students and instructors formed lasting bonds, regardless of borders, languages and distances, a group of close friends who understand each other creative processes and business struggles.
Jane and Phillip are enjoying each other’s company during the Closing Reception and Hat Contest Award Ceremony.
Edwina and Laura, donning their beautiful designs, are celebrating the successful week of sharing millinery knowledge!
After all, who else can you discuss millinery with its unique quirks, techniques and materials but your bestest hat friend?
