Hand-Dyed Parasisal Straw Fascinator with Laura Del Villaggio

Description:

Join Laura Del Villaggio for two days of unique color and pattern play as you learn how to hand-dye parasisal with ombré and resist techniques such as shibori.

We will cover the principles of color and fiber-reactive dye, then students will mix their own dye baths in which to immerse a hood or capeline. After dyeing, students will block parasisal over a fascinator hat block. Recommended shapes include berets, perchers and pillboxes.

Parasisal is a hand-woven straw with a lovely sheen due to its 2×2 weave structure. It comes from sisal, a type of agave. Students will learn how to block and finish a sturdy fascinator base that will hold its shape over time and also support structured trims such as a wired bow.

The parasisal excess cut away after blocking will be used to create the trim. Laura will demonstrate several fun possibilities for sculpting and draping that really highlight the beautiful qualities of this traditional straw.

This is a fantastic course for anyone who has been curious about dyeing but hesitant to dive in. Once you know how to dye parasisal then you can apply the same techniques to other plant-based materials like sinamay, and also offer dye-to-match and one-of-a-kind colors to your customers.-

Elegant Straw and Fabric Hat
with Phillip Rhodes

Description:

This 2-day class is aimed to equip the milliner with approaches to add aesthetic sophistication to your making skills. Today, some materials present challenges whether the hood has an unstable edge or lacks a little density. Simple solutions can be applied to improve the appearance and handling of the straw.

All students will start with a straw hood but creative choices can include inserting a contrast fabric panel or piecing 2 colours of the straw hood together to add interest.

These are fantastic means of matching colours to the needs of individual clients that move beyond the usual route of colour-matching trimmings. Simplifying your designs with a step toward minimal style for maximum impact

Blocked 2-piece Vintage inspired Felt Hat & Upturned Brim with Mela Hoyt-Heydon

Description:

Modern millinery often pulls inspiration from the past.

The 1940’s gave us shallow crowned hats with tipped brims, adding a bit of mystery to the wearer.
Using either fur felt, or wool felt capelines, you’ll explore how to create a two-piece hat with a slanted brim that will stay on the head and add drama for your client.

Both 1940’s historical techniques and modern adaptations will be demonstrated, allowing each student to make their own choice during the process. Several brim edge finishes will be included along with a variety of ways to trim your vintage style hat.
